Levine and Campbell) Although ethnocentrism is partly a matter of habit, it is also a product of both deliberate and unconscious cultivation.  What are the effects of ethnocentrism?  Ethnocentrism reinforces nationalism and patriotism. Without it a vigorous national consciousness is probably impossible.  Ethnocentrism has been used to discourage the acceptance of alien elements into the culture. While ethnocentrism provides  rationalization for the privileged, it also brings compensation to those of low status. As a summary; all societies and all groups assume the superiority of their own culture which is called ethnocentrism. The ideas and customs about which people are ethnocentric vary with social background, but people of all types, liberal and conservatives alike often display ethnocentrism.
